The total box office was $121 million, which is 23% better than last weekend. Granted, this is 26% lower than the same weekend last year. Normally a drop this severe would be troubling, but this isn’t a normal situation. Firstly, this weekend last year was the weekend It (2017) debuted and rewrote the record book. Secondly, 2018 is still ahead of 2017 by 10% or $770 million at $8.36 billion to $7.59 billion. This means 2018’s gains during the weekdays almost made up for its losses over the weekend.

A SIMPLE FAVOR
A Simple Favor is an upcoming mystery thriller film. Story follows a small-town blogger who tries to solve the disappearance of her mysterious and rich best friend.
@MPAA rating R for sexual content and language throughout, some graphic nude images, drug use and violence. #2018MyChoiceTrailer
Production Budget $20,000,000 | A Simple Favor is not only earning excellent reviews, its buzz is growing at the right time. I don’t think it is going to be a monster hit, but it has a shot at $50 million domestically. To do so, it will need to open with close to $20 million. I’m going with $18 million, but it is important to point out that I am more bullish than most.
A Simple Favor only managed $900,000 during previews, which is lower than I was hoping for. It does have excellent reviews, so that should help its legs, but $15 million is more likely than the $18 million I predicted. Better reviews and a more mature target audience should help its stay in theaters.

However, this is a little better than expected and means it should top $10 million over the weekend. This in turn makes a $50 million domestic run very likely and, if it can come close to that internationally, it will break even very early in its home market run.
The other three films combined earned a fraction of that and A Simple Favor was the only other film to earn more than $10 million over the weekend.

Mandy is one of the best films, but it is playing on Video on Demand, so I don’t expect it will do well at the box office.
Mandy also got to $1 million over the weekend and it too won’t go any further. That said, $1 million isn’t a bad result for a film this weird and it has a real shot at becoming a cult classic on the home market.
